Enclosure Types
Every enclosure is planned around the available space, ground conditions, access needs and the animals using it — with galvanized or black chain-link, custom heights and secure gates.
Residential
A secure perimeter that preserves visibility across the property, so pets can move freely through the yard without a smaller enclosed run. Height, mesh strength, gate placement and bottom clearance are matched to your dog's size and habits.
Residential
A defined area for exercise, bathroom breaks or supervised outdoor time — built beside a home, garage or fence line — keeping the main backyard free for other uses. Gate placement, drainage and ground clearance are planned so narrow spaces stay practical and secure.
Commercial
Individual runs, divider panels, double-gate entries and secure access gates planned around the number and size of animals, daily cleaning needs and available space. Heavier-gauge mesh and reinforced hardware are recommended for high-use areas.
Rural
Larger outdoor areas for active dogs, with room for equipment, trailers and property access. Longer fence lines get stronger posts and wide gates; homes near greenbelts and wooded areas get taller fencing, stronger mesh and reduced ground gaps to discourage coyotes, raccoons, deer and bears.
Multi-Unit
Compact enclosures that define private-use yards, plus durable, low-maintenance containment for tenants with pets. Gates, latches and individual components can be repaired or adjusted between tenancies.
Pet-Care
Controlled outdoor exercise and relief areas for clinics, groomers and daycares — with secure gates, practical access and easy-to-maintain layouts built for higher-use environments.
Custom Engineering
The right height, mesh and bottom security depend on your dog's size, athleticism and escape history. Choose the profile that sounds like your dog.
Small dogs and puppies may need tighter mesh, reduced ground gaps and secure gate clearances to prevent them from squeezing through or underneath the enclosure. We check the fence line around slopes, drainage areas and uneven ground where openings can form, and fit a proper bottom edge with a pet-resistant latch.
Medium and large dogs often require taller fencing, stronger mesh and reinforced gates to withstand regular pushing, jumping and activity. Fence height reflects the dog's size and behaviour, while post strength, latch security and bottom clearance are planned to remove weak points around the enclosure.
Athletic dogs and strong climbers may need a taller enclosure with limited footholds and fewer objects positioned near the fence. Sheds, decks, retaining walls and landscaping can give a dog extra height or leverage, so the full area is reviewed before installation. Smaller mesh openings reduce footholds; stronger posts and gate hardware handle dogs that regularly test the fence.
Dogs often escape beneath a fence rather than over it, especially where the ground is soft, uneven or disturbed. Bottom rails, reduced ground gaps, buried mesh and reinforced areas near gates discourage digging. Slopes, drainage channels, corners and gate bottoms get special attention because they create the easiest escape points.
Spec Sheet
Material choices come down to your dog's strength, how the enclosure is used and how it should look on the property.
Finish
Galvanized chain link is the practical, economical choice for reliable strength and low maintenance. Black vinyl-coated chain link offers the same open visibility with a softer look that blends into landscaping and residential yards.
Strength
Standard residential mesh suits most household dogs and typical backyard enclosures. Heavy 9-gauge commercial mesh adds durability for large or powerful dogs, multi-dog households, kennels and animals that push, jump or chew at the fence. Smaller mesh openings contain puppies and toy breeds and reduce climbing footholds.
Access
Pedestrian gates — everyday access with strong hinges and pet-resistant latches
Wide equipment gates — room for mowers, wheelbarrows, ATVs and kennel maintenance
Self-closing hardware — never accidentally left open by visitors or service providers
Lockable & pet-resistant latches — for dogs that push, paw or learn standard hardware
Double-gate entries — one gate closes before the next opens, ideal for kennels and door-rushers
Site Conditions
On sloped ground, the fabric can follow the grade or step in level sections, with the bottom edge planned so grade changes never create escape gaps. Privacy slats reduce visual triggers from pedestrians, traffic and neighbouring pets — and because slats add wind load, we spec Schedule 40 pipe, stronger posts and deeper footings to over-engineer for the added pressure.
How It Works
We review your dog's size, strength, behaviour, escape history and how the enclosure will be used — this drives the height, mesh, gates and bottom-security features.
We assess the fence line, soil, slope, drainage, access points and nearby structures. Trees, retaining walls and sheds matter too — they can reduce the effective height of a fence.
Based on the pet and property review, we recommend fence height, mesh strength, post size, footings, bottom treatment, gate style and latch system suited to the project.
Your quote outlines the layout, materials, gates, removal work and installation scope — a clear picture of what's included before any work begins.
Posts are set in concrete footings — 2 ft for line posts and 3 ft for terminal posts — sized to ground conditions and enclosure height. Mesh, rails, fittings and gates are installed to the approved layout.
The finished enclosure is checked for ground gaps, loose mesh, gate clearances, latch operation, corners and grade changes, and we walk you through any maintenance recommendations.

Large or athletic dogs typically require 5-foot to 6-foot fencing.
The right height depends on your dog's jumping ability, climbing behaviour, and nearby structures like decks or retaining walls that give extra leverage.
Yes, athletic dogs can climb standard chain link if they get footholds. Installing smaller mesh openings, taller fencing, or removing launch points near the perimeter significantly discourages climbing.
Bottom rails, buried mesh dig-guards, and tight ground clearance prevent digging escapes. Special attention is required at gate bottoms, slopes, and soft ground areas where gaps naturally form.
Puppies and toy breeds can squeeze through standard 2-inch residential mesh. Using smaller mesh openings and tight bottom clearances keeps small pets securely contained.
Standard 11-gauge wire works for typical household pets, while heavy 9-gauge mesh is best for large or aggressive dogs. The right height depends on your dog's jumping ability, climbing behaviour, and nearby structures like decks or retaining walls that give extra leverage.
Privacy slats reduce visual triggers like passing traffic, pedestrians, or neighbourhood pets. While slats help calm reactive dogs, they increase wind load, requiring Schedule 40 posts and deeply set concrete footings.
Both offer equal structural security, but black vinyl blends seamlessly into backyard landscaping. Galvanized steel is an economical, low-maintenance choice for high-use agricultural or commercial dog runs.
A chain-link roof panel is recommended for extreme jumpers, climbers, or severe weather shade. Covered runs protect animals from snow and rain while securing dogs that jump higher than standard top rails.
Chain link can smoothly follow natural ground contours or be built in stepped level sections. Grade changes must be closely fitted along the bottom edge so digging or crawling gaps are eliminated.
Pet-resistant, pad-lockable, or self-closing latches prevent dogs from opening gates by pawing. Self-closing hinges ensure visitors or service providers never accidentally leave the gate unlatched.
Permanent chain-link runs set in concrete footings offer vastly superior security and wind durability.Portable panels shift over time and allow dogs to dig underneath unreinforced ground edges.
Most residential dog runs are completely installed in 1 to 2 business days. Line posts are set 2 feet deep and terminal posts 3 feet deep in concrete before mesh and gates are tensioned.
Pricing depends on total fence length, wire gauge, height, gate count, and site slope. Contact Fraser Valley Chain Link for an accurate written estimate based on your specific property layout.
Yes, existing chain link can be heightened, reinforced with bottom rails, or fitted with better gates. An on-site inspection determines whether current post footings can support modifications.
Enclosures should include clean water, shade, shelter from rain, proper drainage, and safe surfacing. Keep garbage, hazardous tools, and vehicles outside the fence line.
